BU16 and Grid Editor

I just but BU16 in order to perform (what I was thinking will be) some easy task as sending Program Changes and SySex messages via MIDI to hardware MIDI workstation. Unfortunately after almost one week trying I have no success at all. I’m thinking seriously to return the controller since I will be unable to do what I’m looking for. There is a final step I can take. I’d like to be sure 100% that my hardware (MIDI workstation) can receive the messages I’d like to send. Although I try send the messages via Cubase with absolute success, I’m still not positive that BU16 can send the messages. What I want to know is: Can “Grid Editor” send “real” messages from a virtual BU16 module, when I “click” a virtual button? Let’s say that I assign a very simple not on message to a “virtual button” is there a way to click this “virtual button” and send this message from Grid Editor running on a computer, via USB MIDI to the hardware workstation? And if yes how?
Thanks in advance for any help

Please update both Editor and the Grid Firmware to the latest version on your modules and report back if you still experience this issue after that.

Question has nothing to do with firmware updates. I just wondering is Grid Editor (the software itself / the application) was capable to transmit by self (not via any hardware controller connected to Grid Editor) messages via USB to external devices like a keyboard workstation connected to the same computer where Grid Editor runs, using “virtual controllers” and “virtual buttons” NOT from a real controller. After hours of experimentation I think that this is not possible (but not sure in any case… just all my experiments failed).

I don’t think that is possible strictly from the editor that I’m aware. I made a Python script to send midi messages using MIDO. But you could do the same with a DAW or other less boutique solutions. Happy to share if that’s helpful.

Edit: I’m re-reading… can you share the profile? It could be firmware. The scheme for the messages has changed/is changing? I don’t think you can send messages thru a virtual controller other than into the midi monitor.

I’d be more curious to capture, with the same tool, what message your device is sending vs what message is coming from cubase. Do you have any other hardware that can send a sysex?

I’m so sorry about that reply, I just pressed send on both your posts with the same message assuming I just forgot to reply. I did that without reading…

Okay, so you’re struggling with sending SysEx messages to your workstation via Grid Editor.

Editor is not able to communicate via MIDI, only an actual Grid controller can. Grid Editor has no such capabilities, this is a job best left up to a DAW. Virtual Modules within the Editor are not actual emulations of the Grid Firmware (though we do have a simulator un the Firmware repository somewhere) and because of this, the Virtual Module is only there to showcase how you can use Editor to configure Grid, nothing more.

BUT a Grid controller would be able to send any kind of SysEx message you might need, so I’m kind of puzzled as to why would you want to use the Editor for this.
What is your use-case for this kind of a setup?

If you need help setting the BU16 up for workstation tasks, I’m happy to help!
