VSN1L as a stage fold back monitor controller

Hi Folks I’m new here, I play in a band called Coastal Drift in Perth, Western Australia. I’ve been looking for an alternative to the wifi apps for controling our in-ear mixes from an Allen&Heath Qu-SB desk. Since we have added everyone on in-ears as well as having wireless for three instruments and two vocals (using antenna combiners etc.) we are definately seeing a marked deciline in the wifi performance for the connection to everyones phones (to control their mixes). I saw the VSN1L and thought it may be a solution to replace the phone app problem. My thinking is as follows:

  1. We will have a single VSN1L on a stand in the center of the stage
  2. The four small buttons beneath the screen will be used to select the monitor mix for each user.
  3. The eight large buttons will be used to select the required channel to control, vocal. bass, guitar, etc.
  4. The encoder will adjust the volume for that channel.
I believe this is possible with the controller but I am new to the software so need some guidance please. I am not looking for someone to spoon-feed me the solution as I need to learn the softaware. As such I have two questions:
  5. Is there a current ‘Getting Started’ vidio tutorial or manual?
  6. From what I can see of the Lua code, I need to create, what would be called a ‘global’ variable in some other languages, to save values, so that pushing one of the small buttons would populate that variable, to select the mix, then when a large button was pressed, to select the channel, and finally when the encoder was rotated, it would use those two variables to send the required midi message.
What I don’t know is how to create a global variable that can be used in multiple controls.
Sorry for the log winded post but I am exited about the posibilities for this! Cheer Simon
